Avengers (Vol. I) #83

...The Revolution's Fine!

Avengers (Vol. I) #83A new character named the Valkyrie wants to unite high-profile super-heroines to start a new all-female team. Are these ladies tired of living in the shadows of their male counterparts? Sure they do! Are they willing to do us in employing such drastic way? Err, maybe not. Can we suspect that things are not what they seem?

Ah, the Lady Liberators... we're still waiting for their return after close to 35 years! Or any Marvel super-powered females team! This is much a product of its time, when Women's Lib was in its infancy. The Valkyrie is sure determined and we will still see more of her (albeit with a different mission). Nice to see that she remembers the Black Widow's many failures to join the Avengers... and Wasp and Scarlet Witch too-often backseat roles. The last two were the only female members at the time (and this being issue #83) and weren't on duty at the same time very often.

The girls here mop the floor with their male partners, even though the Vision is unconvincingly subdued (two times!). There's a great reference to the OTHER Avengers: John Steed and Emma Peel. The Masters of Evil don't impress much, but the Rutland Halloween Parade does. A fun-filled issue.
