Avengers (Vol. I) #38
In Our Midst... an Immortal!
The
villainous Enchantress confuses the demi-god Hercules with a love potion, in
the hope of using him in a scheme to get revenge on the Avengers. Hercules
soon attacks, but eventually gets back to his senses. Consequently, he's exiled
to Earth, having left Olympus without divine consent. So in a sense, he's grounded.
The Avengers offers shelter and fellowship. Meanwhile, the Black Widow is offered
a spy mission by SHIELD, which infuriates Hawkeye.
This is the introduction of Hercules in the Avengers; he will have a long and colorful career in their ranks. Also, with the official return of Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch in the roster and the Black Widow around, it seems that our cast has gotten bigger. Once again, the Widow's eventual membership is talked upon, without significant change. Strange that Cap mentions that the Avengers just arrived minutes ago from Europe... and they're waiting for the Widow? Wasn't she with them?
It is noted that the Wasp is chairbeing for the session and Cap officer-of-the-day
(?). And it's been a while seen we last saw Jarvis.
Hawkeye decides to quit the team (and how many times will he make this melodramatic gesture?). A fine issue, with sometimes rushed scenes (should have been a two-parter). Hercules' power is on par with Thor's, as we can see here, as he mops the floor with Avengers' butt.
