Avengers (Vol. I) #18

When the Commissar Commands!

Avengers (Vol. I) #18The Avengers are challenged by the Commissar, an evil ruler of some communist Asian country, who wants to show his enslaved subjects how capitalists are weak and timid. The team is lead into a trap where they have to face the evil ruler individually, but which of the four will be successful into defeating the warlord?

Always fun and campy to see the "evil reds" depicted in this topical context. "Your communist masters!" Cap begins his series of melodramatic self-monologues that are now legendary, as he seems sad and bitter. This issue is a fast-read and really fun. We get to see the four members working very well together and as a bonus, the Scarlet Witch saves the day! Not something that happened very often in these times! Not with a very memorable villain, but enjoyable nonetheless. Plan 7 is executed.

Oddly, Jarvis as now few hair on his head than in issue #16! We learn that the Witch always wanted to be a performer and that Cap doesn't mind tackling injustice on an international level.

After this, we can witness old and new Avengers together in Fantastic Four Annual #3/Marvel Heroes & Legends '96, which depicts Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Girl's frenetic wedding.
