Avengers (Vol. I) #11
The Mighty Avengers Meet Spider-Man!
Kang has a tough time dealing with the fact that the Avengers defeated him
in issue #8. A very tough time. So he creates a Spider-Man robot to mystify
the team and lead them to a deadly trap in South America. It nearly works,
but nobody counted on the participation of the real Spider-Man, who is not
very pleased to see a facsimile of himself as a villain.
A fun issue, which begins a very long list of Spider-Man's try-outs to become an Avenger (after failing miserably in his quest to join the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man trying to become an Avenger will almost be considered a running gag in the future). Trouble is, the real McCoy doesn't appear until the last four pages! And it's a pity that Spidey doesn't stick around at the end to exchange wisecracks with the team...
Also, Kang's hare-brained scheme is an unusual one for him: the character
will have to wait for his next appearance to be more clearly defined and escape
the usual routine of then-current villainy. Still, this is a fun and fast
read, where we can see the team really working with more specific internal
rules. For the first time, an active member is absent (Iron Man) and is giving
a temporary leave of absence (although he can be erronously seen on the cover).
And a scene which will become familiar in the future is included: Giant-Man upset at being disturbed in his lab!
