Avengers (Vol. I) #6
The Mighty Avengers Meet the Masters of Evil!
A
team of super-villains band together, under the leadership of nazi scientist
Baron Zemo. Zemo, having learned that his former enemy Captain America
is still alive, is obsessed with Adhesive X, a super-glue that had stuck
a hood to his face. His three recruits attack the people of New York City,
gluing them to the ground. Can the Avengers stop this insane plan? Can
Captain America finally get revenge on the madman that killed his WWII
sidekick, Bucky?
This is the incredibly and supremely important introduction to the Masters of Evil, the Avengers' arch-foes who, in various incarnations, will plague the team to this day. The legacy of Baron Zemo, in particular, will be a deadly nuisance. Absolutely perfect pacing and nonstop action: take note, modern writers! Another peerless chapter, one of the real true classics of all time. And how about that cover? And VERY interesting to note that Giant-Man is left winded after changing sizes too frequently... this will not be forgotten in the future.
Oddly, the Paste-Pot Pete's cameo depicts him with the face of the Wizard,
his future boss in the Frightful Four. Captain America gives one of his best
early speeches, as he fights one-on-one with Zemo ("This is the face
of a free man..."). In fact, the dialogue here is very interesting,
fitting each character perfectly.
This was the first ever Avengers story that I've ever read, in an oversize B&W French reprint. Needless to say, I've been hooked ever since.
