Avengers (Vol. I) #3
The Avengers Meet Submariner!
The
Avengers are convinced that the Hulk should remain with the team, as
he
could be a greater menace on his own. Iron Man contacts other heroes
for any help they can give. Meanwhile, the Hulk makes an uneasy alliance
with
a vengeful Sub-Mariner: together they plan to dispose of the Avengers
and then nothing will get in their way to take revenge on the human
race. Revenge!
25 pages of page of pulse-pounding excitement! For twelve cents! All the major players of the Marvel Universe of the time appear, to consolidate everything. The now 4-members team tries to stay loyal to the Hulk... with no positive results. This tale (a bit grim at times, with a certain sense of tragedy) was the lead-in to one of the most important event in Avengers' history, next issue. A classic of comics storytelling. Iron Man appears with his new red and yellow armor and it is said that the team is now holding monthly meetings. Nice cameos all around.
Note that Professor X is VERY annoyed at Iron Man's intrusion. The Marvel
Universe was more and more depicted as a single, multi-chaptered tale which
we could select in the various comics published. Very interesting to see events
in one book having repercussions in another. Also, it was an excellent touch
to see the Avengers not forgetting the Hulk (regardless of his temper) and
using logic for their next course of action, even when surely being aware
that their interaction as four members is much easier.
May we also suggest reading Journey Into Mystery #112, which proposes a more detailed Hulk/Thor fight?
